Chet Brokaw is currently the author of an article about the most controversial topic in South Dakota this week. As of right now, a law has been passed that legalizes medical marijuana to patients suffering from a terminal illneses such as, AIDS, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and other debilitating diseases, or severe pain. The drug will aid in pain management, nausea and seizures. Registry cards issued to patients specifically by thier doctors can not be prosecuted for having marijuana on them, or having up to six plants (in a locked room). The USFDA has approved the medicinal use of a pill form called Drobinol which contains the active ingredient of marijuana. According to Dr. Blake Curd, "research has not demonstrated smoked marijuana to be helpful as medicine." I can agree with that. People want to just use regular marijuana because it's easier to get a hold of, and it's cheaper than the pill. Legalizing the use of marijuana to help patients is going to cause problems with addiction, and violence. Someone could smoke and then go pick thier child up from school, get in an accident and take innocent lives. To me, taking that risk is something i'm not ready for. Using the pill form, like we have been, is the better alternative to this situation.
